Civil society organizations in Ukraine help UN track country’s progress on disability rights

Ukrainian Civil Society Organizations promoting disability rights took part in “CSO Reporting to the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities" on May 21-22 with UN support.

The two-day training seminar was organized by UNDP in Ukraine and the National Assembly of People with Disabilities, in partnership with the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine and with financial support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

“This event is very important because we are experts in different areas regarding people with disabilities, and when we work together we can learn something new from each other and eventually facilitate the implementation of UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on local and state level,” said Victor Bulka, head of Valid, a Ukrainian NGO for people with disabilities.

In his presentation, Marcus Brand, UNDP Senior Democratic Governance Advisor, said that the implementation of the SDGs and Agenda 2030 simply wasn’t possible without the full integration of the needs, interests and rights of people with disabilities.

That is why it is important to track the implementation of the Convention in the country, Brand added.

Laszlo Lovaszy, a member of UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, conducted an online session in which he advised participants on monitoring the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The seminar participants discussed a list of issues that will help the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities assess how the Convention is being implemented in Ukraine.
